This weeks edition of WIP Wednesday is brought to you by the letter "S"

Why the letter "S" you may ask?

Well, I will tell you - its not because the "S" stands for Slytherin,  Super or Snakes.

This week the letter "S" stands for
Socks, Shawls & Sweaters!

All which were turned in to Detention this week by some Super Slytherin Snakes!

Here are some "S" projects seen in Detention this week.

Monday Mix: Last Minute Homework Suggestions

At the time of writing, we have just about three days to go before the month ends. Three days. Time to churn out some homeworks and get them in. Here are a few suggestions:

Flying

What are you afraid of? Spiders? Bugs? Chapped lips? If you can't think of anything else, I suggest a chapstick cosy and say that you're afraid of having dry lips.

Charms

Anything in two colours, for a new wizard school. This would be the perfect place for more minisocks, snakes, and there's a list of resources for those here.

Potions

Answer the riddle. Answers already out there include a secret, a riddle, trust in your own abilities. For the free-spirited among you, I suggest improvising something - a scrubbie, a dishcloth, something small like that which you just pick up and go. For those who need more structure, what about something that looks like something else - a mystery. I suggest something like this candy corn dishcloth (knit) which looks like decorative candy, but is actually much healthier than that; or for crocheters, this sunny dishcloth which looks decorative but is actually useful. Secret purposes.

Herbology

For the Knarl option, I suggest making a hedgehog. This one is crocheted and uses funky fur for the spikes. If you'd like to do the Streeler, why not dye something red, orange or yellow. If you dyed yarn all three colours, you'd be well on your way to knitting a hat to keep your son warm in his trav-els. Travels.

Defense Against the Dark Arts

I talked in my post a few weeks ago about tunisian crochet, so why not focus on making a container for your sneakoscope? A hat, a bag, a pair of mittens, any of these would work to hold it. I suggest these tiny purses (knit) or this coin purse (crocheted) as holders for very miniature sneakoscopes.

History of Magic

The key to this one is wearable items. Anything that can be worn should be turned in under option one here. The other key is to make it fabulous. If you have sparkly or novelty yarn, here's the place to use it. I suggest headbands as the ultimate fabulous accessory, such as this argyle headband. Or, you can just make a strip as wide as you like and a little shorter than the circumference of your head (for negative ease) and embellish away with buttons, ribbons, or any of these ornamental crocheted flowers.

Care of Magical Creatures

Having spent a little time with thestrals, I was thrilled to see this class. Of course, I've not turned it in yet, but I'm working on it. Anything made of worsted weight yarn will go in here. Why not make a golden snitch - I've heard of people putting catnip in them, to make cat toys out of them, too. You could also stuff it with lavender and keep your trunk smelling lovely in the dorms.

Muggle Studies

And here we hit the point where there's not a lot I can do to suggest. It all depends upon what you've already done. That said, mug cosies are a great wee canvas for practising new skills like cables, buttonholes, crochet, entrelac, colourwork - you get the picture.

Good luck, snakes. Make us all proud. Don't forget to turn in your classes.

Enable one another.

Evil’s Cheat Sheet of Total Domination, May 19-25

What an amazing week everyone had! Classes were packed with smiling, busy students. Care of Magical Creatures was the favorite this week by all.

Slytherins turned in excellent work with 87 posts, more than half our house, however the Badgers were busting a move and got top marks with 115 posts. For those of you watching the House hourglasses, this leaves us with the Hufflepuffs in first place with 309, the awesomely ambitious Snakes in second with 252, the Gryffindors breathing down our necks in third with 248 and the Ravenclaws trailing with 198 homework assignments.

What does this mean? It means post those pictures and turn in your homework RIGHT NOW. Seriously, you only have until Thursday. This Thursday. Then it will be time to bomb detention again.

Unacceptable homework excuse of the week: The moving staircases have it out for me and I couldn’t escape the third floor hallway to turn in my homework. Then Fluffy kept wanting to play fetch…

There are some funny and amazing homework posts out there; I’d like to see yours.

Go Slytherin Go!!!

Snake Staff Interview: Cubejelly

This week in Staff Saturdays, an interview with Cubejelly! Cubejelly is a 7th year prefect (which basically means she's been here for a really long time) (and she has special bathroom privileges).

What made you join Slytherin staff?
I wanted to help Slytherin dominate..er...win the cup!

What is your favourite project from last term?
It's a tossup between my felted fishy coin purse and my first pair of socks.

What's your proudest moment of enabling someone else in the dungeon?
Crocheted shawls!  I made a huge crocheted shawl a few terms ago and we ended up doing a crochet shawl along in the break month because of it.  I love enabling people to learn new skills.  Also, nerd laquer.  That one came down from me ;)

What is something new you've learned thanks to the House Cup - technique or otherwise?
I've learned to knit and dye (more skills to come!).  I'v also learned a lot more about google docs than any one person should ever know.  but most importantly, I've learned that I'm not the only snarky, nerdy, yarny on the planet.  Look out world - there's a metric butt load of us!

Trapped on an island with one skein of yarn - what would it be?
Ooh, I'm not even sure that's a fair question to ask.  It would be alpaca because it's soft and lovely.  And so far, my favorite alpaca has been some that I found at a local alpaca farm (Foothills Yarn & Fiber) where they name the color way after the alpaca it came from and you can meet the alpacas.  The yarn was lovely and soft and I would like to have a pool full of it.

Any words of wisdom for your fellow snakes?
Wisdom?  Um...probably not.   But I will use this opportunity to remind my fellow Snakes that consuming others' horcruxes, even is they are in the form of booze or baked goods, is frowned up.  Don't do it.

Thank you, Cubejelly!

Project showcase, week four!

Aloha snakes! I'll dispense with the silliness and get right to this week's projects:

Grr! Piperredfern found a domo-kun in the Herbology greenhouses!

Alrischa conjures up a flawless Aurora Serum in Potions class.

Maigret crafted a wearable incarnation of her family sneakoscope for DADA. An heirloom sneakoscope, that's so Slytherin!

TrishBadish confronts her fear of sharks (and shark confronts his fear of cats) in Flying class.

A beautiful skein for a first-time dyer! Well done, texaninalaska, for trying something new in Muggle Studies!

These darling little mitts are for Malakaiiii's own wee Magical Creature.

Pacasha brings tales of Atlantis to Charms class, along with this gorgeous shawl.

This beaded silk shawlette is the height of fabulousness. Sri will be turning heads in the HoM classroom.

That's all, folks! Keep on crafting -- as a House, we're a bit behind on the turn-ins but with projects like these, we're going to clean up in bonus points! Until next week!

Monday Mix: Technique Post

Well, snakies, it's 2/3 of the way through the first month of term, and I make that about 1/4 of the way through term in total. Amazing how fast it goes! I just finished knitting Escargot, so the next step will be blocking that.

My suggestion to you this week is to give Tunisian Crochet a go. It fits into several classes - if you've never done it before, it's perfect for Flying or Muggle Studies. Because it looks sort of weird - some stitches look like knitting, some look like weaving - it would work for DADA. If you use worsted weight yarn, you could turn it in for COMC. I'm sure you can think of plenty more options just by using particular colours or making certain things from it (maybe a bag for your sneakoscope made in worsted weight yarn in the colours of an imaginary school, perfect for wearing to a soiree...).

Tunisian crochet is sort of like a cross between knitting and crochet. One row picks up stitches, like knitting, and the next casts them off, pulling loops through loops more like traditional crochet. Sneakily, it also uses masses of yarn. Rack up those yardage bonuses!

There are heaps of tutorials out there for Tunisian crochet. I found this one useful, and thought this one was very clear, with great pictures (man, I love blogs.) If videos are more your style, I liked this one to get started, and then there are lots linked in the sidebar.

(Image Source; see how it looks like knitted fabric?)

A dishcloth would be perfect to give this new technique a try. Just chain as wide as you want it and then keep on going until it's sufficiently long. Or how about a little pouch? If you need a pattern, there are plenty available for free on Ravelry.

Evil’s Cheat Sheet of Total Domination; May 12-18

Sssssssnakes rule the week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally.

I’ve decided you guys need harder info to plot accordingly. Slytherins posted the most homework this week with 79, followed very closely by the Puffs at 78 and a partial, then were the Gryffs with 67 and Ravenclaw trailed at 43.

Slytherins favored Flying this week (it’s really fun, everyone should give it a go) while the rest of the school packed into Care of Magical Creatures (second favorite for Slytherins by one).

Overall this term, however, things are not as promising. The hardworking Badgers are in the lead with 194 and a partial, followed by the Lions with 175, Snakes with 165 and the Claws with 113. A week and a half left to the month, so whip it out and turn it in. Go Snakes go!

Unacceptable homework excuse of the week: The House Elves washed my uniform with my homework still in the pocket.

There’s still time, so stop plotting and start executing, er, finishing. Show us what you’re made of Noble Crafty Snakes!

Project Showcase, week three!

Good morning fellow snakes! If you need a kick in the pants to turn in some homework, follow in the footsteps of these talented classmates of yours:

These flat hexies by knitreaver remind me of charming garden footpath stones. Very appropriate for Herbology!

A beautiful shawl for Muggle Studies -- well done, knidancer!

JaimeK is going to wear this elegant flower to History of Magic!

Lillerina knitted a secret message into her Potions mitts... hmm... a riddle indeed...

These cute little booties are for Xaintes's nephew! A whole CoMC class will have a hard time keeping up with the wearer of these little shoes.

In Flying class, 01Tangled conquers the fear of the open ocean with this wee sweater. Ahoy!

GothKnitty whips up a killer Confundus in Charms class. Look at the colours in these blanket squares!

This golden DADA skein is EvilMichelle's representation of her sneakoscope.

Until next week, snakes. CRAFT ALL THE THINGS!

Slytherin Tournament of Hotties!!!

The results are in for the first round of the Harry Potter Division!

The silver bar is for the first name listed and the green bar is for the second name listed.  The numbers represent the percentage of votes.

The last bracket proved to be an interesting match up.  Sirius was leading the entire week, but on the last day of voting Lucius stormed ahead picking up enough votes to come out on top.

The HP Characters moving on to round two are: Draco, Cedric, Ginny, Bellatrix, Prof. Snape, Hermione, Neville, and Lucius.

This week we need you to weigh in on the Movie Division.  This, in my opinion, is the toughest bracket in the whole tournament.  There are way too many eligible hotties for this division but I did my best in picking out the most popular and the most recent additions.

Chris Evans (top) vs. Chris Hemsworth (bottom)

Daniel Craig vs. Sean Connery
Christian Bale vs. Hugh Jackman
Tom Cruise vs. Ryan Gosling

Ewan McGregor vs. John Cusack

Johnny Depp vs. Ioan Gruffudd
George Clooney vs. Viggo Mortensen
Zac Efron vs. Josh Hutcherson
